The Self-Care Capacity Scale for the Elderly (SASE) was developed to assess perceived self-care capacity in older adults. The SASE is a self-assessment tool developed by Söderhamn to measure the self-care capacity of older people. The SASE consists of 17 items related to activities of daily living, well-being, dominance, willpower, determination, loneliness and the way of dressing. The score for each item ranges from 1 to 5 (“totally disagree”) and “5” totally agree).
Three points were considered neutral scores. Items that contain negative statements are added up by inverting the score. The total score ranged from 17 to 85, and higher scores indicate a greater capacity for self-care. The items on the scale were also consistent with each other to evaluate personal care in a three-dimensional way.
Overall, a satisfactory level of internal consistency was considered to be a Cronbach's α ≥ 0.7 for the scale and all subscales. The internal consistency of the T-SASE and the reliability of the test and repetition of the test were high, and its validity was acceptable in the analysis of the validity of the construct in terms of the convergent substance. The Self-Care Capacity Scale for Older People (SASE) is a frequently used scale that was created in Sweden according to Orem's self-care deficit theory and was later modified in accordance with Pörn's theory of the environment and purpose. The strong point of the study is the independent expert panels to translate and evaluate the validity of the scale's content.
Therefore, other scholars must evaluate the validity and reliability of the instrument and then use it according to their needs. Therefore, this tool provides doctors and researchers with a coherent assessment of the self-care capacity of patients and older people. Health and self-care perspectives among older people will be implemented in an interactive information and communication technology platform. Factors relevant to the health and personal care of older people can be used for periodic evaluation to support and promote healthy aging.
Measuring self-care capacity in older people plays an important role in improving their quality of life. This study recruited a total of 122 participants and applied international guidelines for the translation and adaptation of the scale. Therefore, increasing responsibility for self-care allows older people to rely less on them and improve their quality of life. Considering the importance of standardized and adapted PROMs in geriatric occupational therapy, the T-SASE is an essential tool for evaluating the self-care capacity of older adults when performing activities of daily living and for identifying problems of individual care.
